The hilly hamlet of Centereach in the town of Brookhaven, NY is appropriately named it's where you are when you've reached the center of Long Island. One of its main roads (Route 25) and its high school are even named Middle Country. Surrounding Suffolk County communities and villages include Lake RonkonkomaEast SetauketLake Grove and Selden.

Even into the first half of the 20th century, Centereach was an undeveloped backwater compared with some North Shore neighbors like SetauketStony Brook and Port Jefferson, some of which became thriving settlements as early as the 18th century. Since the 1950s Centereach has become a modern suburban community of over 31,000 people, yet it remains one of Brookhaven's more affordable areas. Developers proceeded cautiously when building within the area, which some say is the reason Centereach was able to retain its level of community pride and cohesiveness.

Convenience is a big plus in this central island location. There is easy access to major highways 10 minutes to the Northern State Parkway or the Long Island Expressway. Homes here are somewhat lower in price compared to those in nearby towns and villages. The community here is friendly and civic-minded; residents stay involved with local affairs and work together to improve roads, parks and other amenities. Centereach is near plentiful shopping and popular chain restaurants in almost every direction. The Centereach Park and Pool offers residents a great cool-down spot on summer days.

The closest Long Island Railroad stations are at St. James (Port Jefferson branch) and Ronkonkoma (Ronkonkoma branch). Long Island MacArthur Airport is about 12 miles away in Ronkonkoma.
